Bill Taylor

 

William Taylor, who was an Illinois State wrestling champion and graduated from Proviso in 1957, continued to wrestle at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa.  While working to supplement the Cornell scholarship  he was active in campus activities and his fraternity and served as the fraternity's  president in his senior year at Cornell.  After graduating from college in 1961, Taylor worked as a bank examiner for the Chicago Federal Reserve Bank.  In 1969 he began employment at the Upper Avenue National Bank in Chicago;  and beginning in 1972 he managed the Chicago office for the James Rouse mortgage development company. 

 

In 1976 he moved to Washington, DC to take a position on the staff that serves the Federal Reserve Board, the Central Bank of the United States.  He was promoted to Chief of the Bank Supervision and Regulation Staff of the Federal Reserve and reported directly to Chairmen Paul Volcker and A. Greenspan..  In October 1991 President George H. W. Bush appointed Taylor to the Chairmanship of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation where he served his country until his untimely death in August 1992.

 

Bill is survived by his wife Sharon; two daughters, Claire and Emily; and a son, William Taylor 3d.  Sharon was with the CIA until her retirement a few years ago.
